Demur, a verb, means to show reluctance to do something or to hesitate to do something.

The boss wanted to fire the employee because he demurred at working overtime.

Demure, an adjective, means shyly modest or pretending to be shyly modest.

The young driver was demure when she was stopped by the policeman.
