Clothes and Cloths

Clothes refers to the garments that we wear. When these garments need to be washed and dried, we hang them on a clothes line, usually outdoors.

Before travelling, she packed her clothes in her suitcase.

Cloths refers to material that is made from such products as cotton, wool, linen, and silk. In a department store, one can purchase a quantity of cloth to make a garment. Cloths also refers to pieces of clothing that are torn apart and used for cleaning purposes.

The mechanic purchased a box of cloths to use in the garage to clean grease from motor parts.
